Well the day has finally come. After many questionable moves and under-performing seasons Texan’s head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien has been fired. To begin with I mean no disrespect in this article as we must keep in mind that a man lost his job. Through the HBO series of hard knocks we got to see first hand the personality of Bill O’Brien, he is a genuinely nice guy. However, there is a reason he’s staked a bad reputation in the league. In this article I’ll briefly run trough the spiraling downfall of the former Penn State coach. (In no particular order)
- Protecting Watson
We begin with the lack of protection that Watson has received since being drafted in 2017. The title however does not serve justice to his lack of attention to the O-line in his time as a Texan. Throughout the years Bill O’Brien failed to address the O-line struggles in the draft and even traded away one of the best left tackles of the league to the Seahawks for two seconds and a third round pick (we’ll discuss another trade very soon)… and until the 2019 season the Texans have had zero Pro Bowl offensive linemen. Last but not least I am ashamed to say this stat but Watson has been the most sacked quarterback in 2017,2018,2019, and so far 2020. Actually let me simplify it for you, since he joined the league Watson has yet to play a season where he wasn’t the most sacked quarterback.
2. Texans the butt of the joke
Before we had the Astrick or the banging on the trashcan jokes we had the Texans awful decision making and underperforming. Normally you blame either the coach or the GM. However, Bill O’Brien served in both positions. Starting with the awful decision making. Bill O’Brien has become notoriously known for going for it at the worst times and punting at the worst times there is a long list of these occurrences. Mostly O’Brien is commonly known for running it on third and 10 or throwing it on fourth and goal. But this past spring O’Brien made his worst mistake to date.
3. Trades
Bill O’Brien has made a series of bad decisions when it comes to trades , starting with the duane
It was about time Bill O Brien got fired. His trade that “netted” David Johnson along with a 2nd round for Deandre Hopkins was just simply not enough. I mean did you see Hopkins’ catch vs Buffalo?! Disgraceful trade that was the beginning of the end for Mr. O’Brien.
